This commode, in contrast to the one just reviewed, but of about the same date (c.1770-5) has marquetry decoration of neo-classical taste on a framework which retains many Rococo elements strongly French in inspiration. It is made of mahogany with marquetry panels of satin wood and other woods. The front and sides are serpentine. The classical festoons of husks, and border of anthemions and other motifs on the bombé front enclose two oval panels containing marquetry of vases and flowers. The front angles, thoroughly French in conception, have ormolu mounts. This is one of a group of commodes of almost identical design made by john Cobb, who has been mentioned as the former partner of William Vile. After Vile’s retirement, Cobb continued in business alone, specialising in high-class marquetry Unlike many contemporary cabinet-makers, he was very successful in his business, and at his death in 1778
