Ulysse était absent depuis longtemps déjà, lorsque son fils Télémaque partit à sa recherche.
Bien des années auparavant, le prince grec était allé rejoindre Ménélas, qui avait déclaré la guerre aux Troyens. Ulysse n'était pas mort mais pour quelle raison son retour était-il si long ? La guerre était finie depuis des années !
Ignorant le départ de son fils, il demeurait près du roi Alcinoos, auquel il contait ses aventures. Il lui décrivit les îles qu'il avait visitées.
Il raconta aussi sa rencontre avec les Cyclopes, des géants à un œil. Il parla d'Éole, le maître des vents, de la magicienne Circé, des Sirènes et de leur funeste chant. Enfin, il expliqua comment Calypso l'avait retenu.
Touché par ce récit, Alcinoos prépara un navire pour son hôte. Ulysse allait enfin rentrer chez lui ! Lorsqu'il parvint aux portes de son palais, le prince eut du mal à contenir sa rage.
Sa chère Pénélope, son épouse, avait repoussé les prétendants qui lui demandaient sa main. Mais elle n'avait pu les empêcher de gaspiller ses richesses.
Aidé par son fils, qui était également de retour, Ulysse massacra tous les soupirants de Pénélope. Son histoire est racontée dans un célèbre poème
