Marquetry had long been a popular form of decoration in France. In this era, two-toned marquetry with shiny and flat areas was stylish. Often the scenes were classical however this desk shows a Chinoiserie motif. Chinoiserie was popular during the Rococo period and its popularity carried over into Louis XVI.
