My bedroom lights are on a timer so that every morning, they shine full blast on my face as the alarm clock goes off. This is my latest extreme attempt to fight against the momentous comfort that keeps me snoozing long after I need to be on my way to work. Simone Giertz, a YouTube robotics enthusiast who builds crazy contraptions (like a robot that feeds you breakfast—messily) knows how I feel. She's come up with an solution that really packs a punch: an alarm clock that slaps her in the face.
Using a rubber arm from a Halloween store, a modified alarm clock, a motor, and an Arduino microcontroller, Giertz built the “Wake-up Machine,” a violently effective way to wake up. The system is rigged above her bed so that when the alarm goes off, the rotating rubber arm hits her in the face, over and over. It also has a loud traditional alarm, so there’s plenty of noise in addition to the constant slapping.
Apparently, it does pull out her hair a bit; in the video, Giertz has to detangle herself (accompanied by some NSFW cursing). But hey, such is the price of an effective wake-up call. Bear with me while I spend a few months learning robotics so I can build this myself.
