Inaugurée en 1849, gare de Lyon dessert le grand quart sud-est de la France notamment grâce à la ligne de TGV Sud Est avec par exemple les villes de Marseille, Lyon, Nice, Perpignan, Dijon...
Cette importante gare permet le transit de quelques 83 millions de voyageurs chaque année.

De l'extérieur la gare est reconnaissable par sa tour carrée de 67 mètres, arborant sur chacune de ses faces une horloge. Longtemps arrêtée à cause de la tempête de 1999, l'horloge refonctionne désormais.
La première Gare de Lyon portait le nom d'embarcadère de Lyon. Ouverte en 1849, elle n'était à la base faite que de bois. Les travaux pour construire la deuxième version de la gare commencent en 1855. Edifiée sur une butte de 6 mètres de haut afin de prévenir les crues de la Seine, cette nouvelle gare fut détruite en partie en 1871 lors d'un incendie. Lors de la reconstruction, la gare se voit dotée de voies supplémentaires passant alors à 13 voies, avant que 5 autres ne soient ajoutées près d'un siècle plus tard en 1981.
